Summary
Wake up dead...
Pros: Initially, the cool story intro and pretty graphics compelled me to stick around. Then, the varying worlds and gameplay elements required my staying till the end. Quick pacing saves the game from potential boredom.
Nice voice work.
The story was very well executed and thought out. The teamwork aspect, while under-utilized, worked well. Your gargoyle friend, Skree, is used to help solve puzzles throughout the game.
Decent music accompanies the fight scenes and there's plenty of eye candy, even for an older PS2 game.
Cons: The main complaint I've got about the game is the combat. The combat controls seem unresponsive because of the time it takes for your attack actions to initiate. Plus the combat is boring, requiring little skill and a lot of button mashing. Thankfully, the game isn't overly combat laden.
Another problem is that the camera always wants to watch your face during combat rather than watching your opponents. That means that, when you most need the camera, it positions itself between you and your enemies, facing you. Way too often, your enemies are off-screen. While that's annoying, it not so offensive that it ruins the game.
Also, Skree's main ability - wall climbing - seemed a bit too restrictive because you can only climb on walls that the designers want you to.
Reviewer's Comments
The look and the story of the game have to be experienced to appreciate. Primal is the kind of game that could get boring if it weren't so fast-paced because it feels basic and rather uninvolved.
The puzzles are fairly simple and straightforward, making for a smooth ride. Easy but fun.
All in all, I'd recommend Primal for a good time. As long as you don't expect a blockbuster you'll enjoy it. Good game but a bit shy of greatness.
