Alright ill be honest here, being a boxing game on GBA, and remembering the past boxing games excuses that have been released, i wasnt expecting much at all, so with me, this game already had to pull itself out of a deficite..
The game first starts out in the story line, which was a surprise in itslef .. i wont say what the story actually is because it is really kinda shallow and i dont want to ruin for ya..
I'm not gonna tell a lie here, this game takes some getting used to.. infact maybe too much for some casual gamers. To give you an idea of what the gameplay is like, some of you old-schoolers may remember 'Super PunchOut' on SNES... while not an exact copy of it, it is REALLY close, at least as close as you can get on a handheld. Thats probably one of the reasons i like it so much i guess. but anyway...
First of all, for saving, its good and bad i guess.. it has 3 save slots, just enter your initials. It saves the game for you automatically, again i guess that can be good or bad. But it is reliable and will save when you need it to.
The gameplay is top notch here, and it HAS to be..it has , in my opinion, a perfect response time to the controls. which again, i reiterate, is crucial to winning.
The different characters i have fought so far are very well animated and challenging. Each fighter has thier own special ways of fighting, of course, and no they are not all just repeats of each other.
The music is ok i guess, as im not real big on sound and it takes alot to impress me anyway..
The game actually has an economy system, you earn money for winning the normal fights. There are also 'mini challenges' some of which will want to make you fling your GBA as far as you can. And you will need all the money you earn to buy lessons to get more effective punches. If you catch on quick to the game, you will find it easy to win alot and earn money fast and get a little more powerful, but if you struggle and lose, you also lose money. Unfortunatley, that part may be a little unbalanced, it took me forever to finally win the games to make just $100, then i lost the next game and dropped way down to $60, and some of the lessons are costly. again i say, it's challenging! Another really challenging aspect of it is the dodging of the punches. This part some people may find a little retarted and want to give up playing altogether. What it is, is when the computer throws a punch, say he throws a Left, to dodge a left punch you have to move to YOUR right,, if they throw a Right, you have to move to YOUR left. that part there take the most getting used to in the game, and to some players can be totally unfun. But the punches either way are the least bit telegraphed so you do have that split second to think about which way to go. And the good thing is, the controls are so presice, the getting out of the way dosent have to always be at the perfect time everytime, so thats a plus.
Another challenging aspect of it is they hit you ALOT harder than you hit them, even with normal punches. You can take probly about 7-8 normal punches before you get knocked down.. you have to dish out at least 25 to get them down..but, as with most any game, there is some level of memorization to it.
To sum it up, get this game! Its rare these days you find this kind of quality game for the price. Heck i would consider actually BUYING this title myself, and i havnt said that about a GBA game since Ultimate Brain Games (that dosent count Metroid titles of course). I am hardly ever impressed enuff to consider sitting and typing out a review for any game. But again this one has such a classic feel to it, and brought back soooo many memories, it was hard not to.
This one gets a 4.5 out 5 on my personal scale!
