Summary
Innovative and NOT Tetris
Cons:
-The gameplay is very unforgiving, and combined with equally unforgiving controls and progression it all adds to the frustration of knowing exactly how to complete a level but not being able to do it because it\'s to hard to do get done right. This is a puzzle game, your main obstacle should be puzzlesolving, not battling the controls, unreasonable time limits or other more action-based problems. A puzzle game should focus on stimulating your brain, not your thumbs.
-The game is very short. A puzzle game should have a way to play indefinetly, preferably with some sort of random level generator to always provide for more puzzles to solve. Mercury sadly has nothing like that.
-The reflection on the mercury\'s surface is just a simple texture, not actual dynamic reflections (like those seen on the cars in Ridge Racer).
-The framerate drops a little every now and then, not so much or often that it becomes a problem, but it's a shame that it drops at all.
-Very long loading times, especially concidering the relatively small size of the levels.
-Some sound effects seem "out of place"... like they were not meant to sound like "that"...
Pros:
+Unique! No other game makes you control liquid metal to solve puzzles.
+Innovative! Using advcanced physics to create ways to interac with liquids to create puzzles is the most innovative gameplay idea since platforms. If only other companies would just learn what innovation actually means *cough*Nintendo*cough* then we might actually get innovative games like Mercury more than once a generation.
+Beautiful! The design is lovely. Seeing the liquid metal move around is a joy in itself. The graphics are very detailed and nice, everything has interactive shadows that react to lightsources and everything has a healthy amount of polygons to keep things round and smooth.
+It's not another lame and generic Tetris clone! *cough*Lumines*cough*
+Fitting music.
+The gameplay is addictive.
Reviewer's Comments
Flawed in some ways but what it does right makes up for it.
Though it's not a long game, you can always play through everything again as many times as you like, and there are unlockables to unlock and highscores to beat.
One of the three games I keep coming back to on my PSP no matter how many new games I get.
A must have for all puzzle fans and people who enjoy great games in general!
