I cant believe its been 10 years already since MGS4 was released, it still feels like it came out last week.

But a friend of mine from work let me borrow his PS3 and I used that opportunity go to out and buy MGS4. After nearly 10 years I FINALLY get to play the next game in one of my favorite series. I haven't played a metal gear game since MGS3 Subsistence.

I've managed to stay spoiler free all this time too which seems like a miracle.

I played through Act 1 yesterday and my first thoughts is that is somehow manages to feel like a Metal Gear game but also feel new and improved. While the controls still aren't great they're a big improvement over the previous games. The stealth mechanic and the emphasis on staying out of site is also different, it doesn't seem to be as important, but so far im liking it. This next act though appears to be more like previous MG games so we'll see.

Its also good to see a lot of the old characters from MGS1 and 2 coming back, and while I remember all the characters from MGS1 due to playing through it many times, I don't remember MGS2 as well. It was the only game of the series I only played through once. The story was too ridiculous and obviously I didn't enjoy playing as Raiden, and Rose was annoying enough to keep me away.

Thoughts on the first Act was that it was intense. Crawling through a shootout with bullets and explosions all around was a huge change from previous MG games. It actually took me a while to realize the local fighters werent going to attack me for the most part (except one occasion in their underground tunnels where two of them saw me and wanted to shoot me when one of their buddies had just run by me and didnt say anything).

The active camo is really cool but the stealth aspect of the game is different. There' doesnt seem to be as big of an emphasis in staying avoiding line of site, its more about getting past them without all the attention on you. I like it.

When I play MG games I tend to go for no kills when possible and while its fun I often get an itchy trigger finger I have to hold back. The sequence with Meryl and the shootout in the building was a great remedy for that and I hope sequences like that continue in the rest of the game.

In interested to see how this all wraps up, although I already have an idea of what happens with Snake I want to see what happens with everyone else and what the hell is up with Raiden.

I'll try and update this as I finish other acts which should be pretty regularly if this pace continues.

Wasnt Peacewalker a PSP game? I do plan to play Ground Zero's and 5, I also got Metal Gear Rising the same time I got MGS4, so I'll go to that next. Fro GZ and 5 im thinking I might wait until I get a PS4 before I get that, I'd like a box copy of the MGS games and im thinking I'll get a PS4 at some point down the road.

I remember walking past GAME in the Trafford Centre in Manchester the day that this came out, but I'd somehow missed that it was being released. So it remains one of the few games that I've just randomly walked into a store and bought on launch day.

In all honesty, the lengthy cutscenes somewhat cast a cloud over this for me. The gameplay is fantastic, but even when I was happy to play games for hours on end, I was not happy to sit and watch 30 minute plus cutscenes. So that frustrated me. Still a superb game, but I just wasn't a fan of the cutscene length.

Love the game, but it's my least favorite of the metal gear games. But I did enjoy all the fan service! It was a wild ride

I bought this, played for a couple of hours, spent the next week moving back to the UK and ultimately never picked it up again. Such is life.

I just beat it in about a weeks time. I have a lot of free time these days and I did nothing but play this game mostly. The short version is this is my favorite Metal Gear game.

After finishing it I think the game play is the best of the MGS series, it does a good job of allowing you to play how you want. I found myself doing less sneaking that involved interacting with enemies. By that I mean I didnt lay down porno mags or tap on walls or hold people up much, I avoided most enemies unless it couldn't be helped. The more open environments do a good job of allowing for that. And while I loved doing all those things in the previous game I didnt miss it this time around. The boss fights were also pretty fun and a lot more action oriented than some previous games (the end fight in MGS3)

The downside to the game for me like @Crazy Jamie said is the lengthy cutscenes. I swear the final cut scene is an hour long. They throw so much dialog at you and its all with the goal of ultimately wrapping up everyones stories any lose ends, but its a lot. Though I never found myself bored with the cut scenes. So its a negative but it doesn't deter me from loving it. There was also a lot of corny moments (anything involving Raiden and/or
    Vamp
), but that adds to the charm of the game. Its always been a combination of silly things combined with serious things. The game does a good job of making fun of itself.

A side-note is that I had a hard time following the story. All previous MGS games were referenced in this one and everything was connected so it was a lot to follow but other parts of it just didnt make sense. I think I need to go find a good easy summary of the story somewhere and read that because there were a lot of WTF moments, especially at the end.
